Caven saw five years of work come to fruition Tuesday.
Safety City saw its first class of students arrive for
bicycle safety instruction.
Resting
after helping with the outdoor portion of the training,
for 20 Grade 3 students from Park Meadows School, Caven
reflected on the years of planning, fundraising and
preparation that went into the day.
"I
think, what this means to the agency, is we've almost
come full-circle from dream to the reality of it,"
said the co-ordinator.
Although
Caven has been on board for five years, planning for the
safety centre actually started well before.
"This
is a good seven years in the making."
Some
fine-tuning will be required, as Caven and instructor Deb
Fancy realized not enough time was allotted for the
hands-on lessons and more small-sized bikes are required.
Yet she
was obviously pleased with the way the first lesson went.
"It's
nice to get to try this building out," she said,
referring to Safety City headquarters, located just
outside the north entrance to Exhibition Park.
Caven and
Fancy taught the students several aspects of bike safety
and basic bike skills, including riding in a straight
line, starting and stopping and shoulder-checking without
serving or wobbling.
Once the
asphalt yard is completed --it will look like scaled-down
city blocks when done -- instructors will begin teaching
pedestrian safety to kindergarten and Grade 1 students.
Final
construction should be finished over the summer. But for
now the agency already has bike safety classes booked
through the rest of the school year.
"I'm
looking forward to the rest of the season," said
Caven. "I hope we can continue to meet the needs of
the community."
