Safety Education

Well it is that time of year again!  The bulbs are being planted, the lawn will soon be mowed, and the Safety City instructors are getting ready for students zipping by on bikes.
On April 28, we are starting our on -site Bike Safety program for grades 3 & 4.  That means the bikes are being inspected, the miniature streets will be cleaned, and biceps warmed up for bike signals! It looks like we are going to have a great turn out with thirty-three classes already booked!  Now we just hope the spring weather will hold out for us!

Before we started getting ready for Bike Safety, we wrapped up our last in-school program of the year, Outdoor Play.  This program was a great way to remind students how to stay safe as they start to head outdoors.  The program is based on the “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” game and proved to excite the students as they answered questions to arrive at a million points!  See if you can answer the 1,000,000 point question!  Look for it on the back page!

Safety City Parent Clinic

We had promised to bring you news about Parent clinics soon and here it is!  It will soon be summer and many of us will be outside on our bikes, scooters, skateboards, and inline-skates.  Before you head out there, buy a new helmet, or let your children ride on the road, sign up for the first Parent Clinic of the year!

AGM Report 2003

On the evening of February 27, Safety City held its Annual General Meeting at the Henderson Lake Golf Club.  With a great turnout, guest speakers, and artwork it became an event to be remembered!   Over the past several months Safety City has experienced some financial turmoil.  Not knowing what was to happen, we asked several guest speakers to come and speak to our guests and donors as to why Safety City is important.

Sue Howg, a grade 2 teacher at Senator Buchanan School, got the whole school involved in creating posters and booklets with student’s opinions and thoughts on Safety City. They even coined the phrase, “S.O.S.C. - Save Our Safety City!” Her husband, Marlin Howg, a grade 3 teacher at Lakeview School, did the same at his school.  After dinner he karaoked a song the students had written about why Safety City should stay. It brought tears to many eyes that night.

The next to speak was Mathias and his mom, Susan Fikre, who shared their perspective as a student and parent.  Mathias spoke about how fun Safety City is when we come into the classroom and how much the students learn.  Susan talked about her appreciation for Safety City as it supports much of what parents teach their children, and how helpful it is for students to hear it from another source other than parents and teachers all the time!

A HUGE thank you goes out to Susan, and Marlin, Mathias and Susan for telling it like it is, supporting Safety City, and bringing color and artwork from the students of Lakeview and Senator Buchanan schools!

We also pulled out some new chairs for new faces that joined our Board, and took care of Annual business that night.  We would like to welcome Pat Skelly as secretary, Jody Vanee, and Scott Morgan as Directors as all three are new faces to the Safety City Board of Directors.

Thank you to Dan Vas, for his many years of service on the Board as Secretary.  We are happy to see that he will still remain as a Director on the Board.  Jack Fulwiler, Bryan Magyar, Jack Chapman, Keith Robin, and Joe Gillett remain in their seats!

For more information on any of these events, or you just want to chat about all the things we do, call us at 317-1955 or email Patti Caven at Patti@theboss.net

Who wants to have a safe summer?

For ONE MILLION points what would your answer be?  Think back to lazy summer days when you were in elementary school to help you answer this question!

D) All of the Above

(The answer at the bottom of the page)

Our Wish List

We are looking for a few items to spruce up the Safety City site!  Of course we may be dreaming, but if you think you can help us out please give us call.   We are looking for the following:

- One Canadian Flag to go on our flag pole!
- Two Bike racks.
- Landscaping tools, ie.) rake, shovel, large broom.
- Various Office Supplies.

We are also looking for the Dream Team Volunteers to help us out a couple of times a week or a month.  Shifts to fit your schedule!  If you are interested in lending a pair of helping hands let us know what you would like to do by calling Patti or Jessica at the office. We do have some specific jobs for fabulous people:

- Office Volunteers - Database entry, newspaper clipping.
- Set-Up Volunteers - Dinner and Auction, June 13, 14.
- Bartenders - Dinner and Auction, June 14.
- Outdoor/Indoor Support - Landscaping, building upkeep.
- Create your own position!

Answer: B– You always need to wear a life jacket when in a boat.  You can stand up in some boats, and if you are under the age of 16 you don’t need a fishing license!
