Safety Education With winter behind us (hopefully), Safety City is gearing up for its last program of the year, Bike Safety. This program is offered for grade 3 and 4 classes as a field trip to our training site. The students have an opportunity to learn and strengthen their bike riding skills as well as practice the rules of the road they may encounter as they head out this spring and summer. |

Patti and Jessica wrapped up the last in-school program on April 2. Kindergarten and Grade 1 received our Streetproofing Program. The one basic rule to follow is “No, Go, Tell.” In almost any situation with strangers, children should just say no, then walk away and tell someone what happened. This also works with people children know, we taught them to tell before going anywhere with anyone. Grade 2 - 6 reviewed Pedestrian Safety. Patti and Jessica challenged grades 2 & 3 with a ‘Family Feud’ type game involving the rules to crossing safely. Grade 4 and 5’s looked at news articles of real life collisions and tried to determine who could have prevented the crash. And finally the grade 6’s tested their rollerblading skills and safety knowledge with a board game. |

| AGM Report 2004 On February 5, Safety City held its Annual General Meeting at the Henderson Lake Golf Club. It was a wonderful evening allowing our supporters, board and staff a chance to mingle, and chat about where Safety City was a year ago and where we are today. Jennifer Drozdowski, Senior Associate with the Alberta Center for Injury Control and Research spoke about injury in Alberta and some of the partnerships and agencies trying to reduce injury within the province. She talked about how key Safety City is to the overall reduction of injury within children, and outlined possible future roles in educational programming for elementary aged children. The evening culminated in elections of officers and in welcoming eight new people to our Board of Directors, bringing the number of Directors to 19! At this time we would like to thank Jack Fulwiler for his dedication to the organization. Jack has served as Education Committee Chairperson, Vice President, and for the past 2 years as President. He now sits in the Past President chair. Thank you Jack for seeing Safety City through many great times and some rocky ones… you have helped to put us back on track. New to the President’s Chair is Bryan Magyar. Bryan has been with the Safety City Society for 5 years and so far seems like he is settling nicely into the new role! A few more changed chairs this year. Jack Chapman who has been Safety City’s treasurer for the past 6 years, is moving to the Construction and Maintenance Chair. To fill his seat is Lis Wright who currently works at 1st Choice Savings and Credit Union. Pat Skelly has moved to the Vice President’s Chair and in the secretary’s chair is Gwen Wirth-Rosentreter. We would also like to extend a warm welcome Laurie Halldorson, Brian & Jean LaChance, Fraser Stewart, Susan Sauer, Glynn Wright, and Linda Roberts who are all new to our Board of Directors. It looks like another exciting year for Safety City and we are delighted to have you “on-board”!

| Did You Know?
The
fine for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk is $485?
Pedestrians have the right of way at any intersection whether it is a
pedestrian corridor with flashing lights, a marked crosswalk or an
implied crosswalk, the latter occurring at any intersection of two
roads. As motorists, we must also wait until the pedestrian has cleared
the crosswalk by stepping foot on the opposite sidewalk before we can
move through that crosswalk. Your stopped vehicle actually serves as a
sign to other motorists that some one is crossing up ahead. Please take
a little extra caution and watch out for the numerous pedestrians out
for that spring stroll! |
