SAFETY EDUCATION

January and February see our instructors up to their elbows in Streetproofing lessons. Children in Kindergarten through Grade 3 will learn how three simple words (No, Go and Tell) can help them in a variety of situations. For example, if someone asks them for directions, they are lost, or they are being bullied. They will also be reminded to check with their parents before going anywhere with anybody for any reason.

Grade 4 to 6 students will see the first ever installment of our Internet Safety lesson. As much as the internet is a useful tool, it also has its hazards. Our research has lead us to six general guidelines for safety on the net.

1. Children should share email with their parents or use a secure email account.
(i.e. kiddonet.com)
2. Children should not participate in open chat rooms.
3. Personal information should not be shared over the internet.
4. Children should never agree to meet someone they've met online in person. Any attempts to set up meetings should be reported to the police.
5. Computers should be set up in a common room and internet access should be supervised.
6. Families should establish a set of rules that outline acceptable use of the internet. Open
communication will help to keep kids safe!

CONSTRUCTION

The latest news is that our fence has been installed. It might take the neighborhood deer a little while to chart a new path to Henderson Park, but we're happy to be making such progress. Our thanks go out to Gillett Construction Jr. Ltd. for continuing to work in the dead of winter to help us complete our site!

INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE VOLUNTEER - 2001 !

2001 has been designated as the International Year of the Volunteer by the United Nations. If you are looking to make a difference this year, Safety City can use your talents. Specifically, we are in need of assistance on our Public Relations and Fundraising Committee and on our Nominations Committee. Committees generally meet once a month, depending on the activities or tasks at hand and food is usually involved.

Please call Patti if you are interested in joining one of these committees, helping around the office, shoveling snow, making us dinner, or anything else that interests you! We've always got room for more!

2000 DONORS LIST

Each January we like to publish a list of the donors for the previous year. We would like to thank everyone for your incredible support in 2000. Our success depends on people and companies like you and yours!
