The Year 2004
Safety City: “Instilling lifelong safety attitudes within children.”

SAFETY EDUCATION

We can’t believe it is January already and we are breezing through our third program of the year!  Currently we are visiting schools teaching the students about winter safety.  We focus on two main areas, dressing warm, and safe play. That means not forgetting our mitts, toques, and boots as well as remembering to wear a helmet while sledding, skiing and skating safely.

Patti and Jessica wrapped up 2003 with their Motor Vehicle Safety program.  While serving as a good reminder for students to sit in the back seat if there is an airbag and to buckle up at all times, Patti and Jessica took it to the next level.
Bringing deployed airbags and seatbelts into the classroom they explained how science gives us these tools to keep us safe and our job is to respect and use them properly.  A great big thanks goes out to Hepp’s Auto Wreckers who donated the used parts.
Here are couple of the factoids we shared with the classes:
- Did you know that an airbag deploys at a speed of 334 km/h, faster than a person can blink?
-
That objects, including the body, weigh 30 times what they normally weigh if the vehicle is in a collision at 40 km/h?

A great big scary Halloween Thank you goes out to the Lethbridge Herald and the NIE coordinator, Cecelia Frohlick, for organizing a “Pumpkin Fundraiser’ for Safety City.
