Canbra Golf Tournament

We just got word that Safety City will be one of four recipients of funds from the 10th Annual Canbra Foods Ltd. Canola Harvest Charity Golf Classic. The Tournament will be held on Thursday, Aug. 31st at Paradise Canyon Golf and Country Club.
The funds we receive will allow for the installation of sprinklers and sod to the grassed areas of the site, as well as the site leveling and hydra seeding for the natural grassed areas. We are very grateful for the opportunity to partner with yet another community minded organization.
Watch for details in the media and
email or call Safety City (317-1955) of you would like to participate in this event, or work as a volunteer.

SAFETY EDUCATION

It’s hard to imagine that we have been teaching safety lessons for four years now, but it’s true! Last year we predicted that we had reached our maximum, but we managed to squeeze even more classes into our schedule this year. Take a look:

Program Total
Pedestrian Safety 5817
Winter Safety 5612
Streetproofing/Bullies 5626
Bicycle Safety 5919
Summer Fun Safety 6070
TOTAL 29,044

Beginning this fall we plan to take our pedestrian lessons out of the classroom and onto the streets; the streets of Safety City that is. If construction proceeds as planned, Kindergarten and Grade one students will be joining us at Safety City where they will learn hoe to be safe pedestrians. This important safety program will be sponsored by the good folks at Southland Credit Union.
Safety City will be teaming up with LA Transit again this year to teach Motor Vehicle Safety. Students will be reminded of the importance of wearing seatbelts and of proper behavior in and around busses.
The rest of the schedule for the 2000-2001 school year is posted later in this newsletter.

CONSTRUCTION

Trucks have been trucking, graders have been grading, packers have been packing, installers have been installing, electricians have been electricing??? You get the picture, things are happening on the Safety City site. We are happy to announce that the Construction Committee is working hard to make sure the site is completed this fall. Some volunteer labor will be required, so if you feel you’d like to help email or call Leanne at 317-1955.

Safety Makes 'Cents'

We didn’t make the mile that we were hoping for, but the Safety Makes ‘Cents’ campaign did bring in over $900 to the Safety City coffers. We had so much fun doing it that we aren’t going to stop. The goal is still to raise $10,560 (That’s 1,056,000 pennies, rolled and placed end to end, measuring one mile.) it’s just going to take us a little longer than we thought.
During the upcoming school year we hear a challenge has been issued from the good folks at Lakeview School. Any school who accepts the challenge will collect pennies and other loose change to donate to Safety City. Thank you to everyone who has collected change for us so far, and to those who are planning to start this year.

Program Sponsorship

Safety City is offering businesses and service clubs an excellent opportunity to become involved in our organization: program sponsorship.
Southland Credit Union will be sponsoring Pedestrian Safety this fall. All educational materials sent home with the children would contain their name and/or logo, and a picture of "Fat Cat", the mascot of their children’s accounts. Watch for the announcement to the public in the Lethbridge Herald this fall.
The other four programs Safety City will be offering during the 2000-2001 school year are still available for sponsorship.
Email or call Patti at 317-1955 for more information

Wild Rose Foundation

Safety City is happy to announce the receipt of a $25,000 grant from the Wild Rose Foundation. The funds are earmarked specifically toward coordination and instruction of safety programming for the upcoming school year. We wish to thank the Board of Directors at the Wild Rose Foundation for their support.
