SAFETY EDUCATION

This past school year has been full of adventure for Safety City and its Staff. In the fall Safety City acquired a new instructor, Jessica Kleissen. In the winter some of our programs had to be cancelled or re-scheduled due to the teacher's strike, and in the spring Bike Safety was able to be taught on our mini-city, giving the students practical experience of biking on city streets. Here are some of the more interesting stats on our programs for the 2001/2002 school year:
Pedestrian Safety .................... 6,895
Winter Safety .......................... 6,874
Streetproofing ......................... 5,116
Helmut Habit ........................... 6,078
Bicycle Safety (on-site) ............ 763
Total # of Students .............. 25,675

This spring Safety City participated in Safe Kids Week from June 1-8, emphasizing the importance of wearing a helmut when on wheels. With some of the funding we received from Safe Kids Canada, and the support of Bert and Mac's, and the Making Connections Program, 18 children will have helmuts to wear while on wheels this summer!

VOLUNTEERS

Once again, our volunteers have come through for us! On June 22, in conjunction with 1st Choice Savings and Credit Union, Safety City had a very successful garage sale! We made over $1700! We wish to thank everyone who donated their treasures, those who purchased new treasures, and the wonderful volunteers who helped out! A special thank-you goes out to 1st Choice Savings and Credit Union for all their assistance! We still have some treasures left over if anyone is interested, give us a call!
Safety City would also like to send three thank you cheers. One to Rob and Geri Andreachuk for painting the lines on the Safety City roadways. Before they were painted we noticed some students had trouble staying on the right side of the road!
A cheer to Brent Botfield of Lethbridge Audiovisual, for his donation of two white boards. They definitely came in handy for our Bicycle Safety program. It is one thing to explain traffic rules to students who don't drive yet, it is entirely different when they have pictures to go with the words!
And our third cheer goes to our Board members, Bryan Magyar and Jack Chapman for mowing and spraying our jungle of weeds.

SUMMER SAFETY TIPS

Don't let your summer be a trauma summer! Here are some helpful tips to keep you and your family safe and still have fun!

  • Drink plenty of water , even during a water fight! Dehydration can be serious and often is a forerunner to heat exhaustion and heatstroke
  • Wear protective gear when biking, in-line skating, skateboarding, using a scooter and during water activities! Life jackets and sunscreen count as protective gear as well!
  • Don't forget to slip on clothing, slap on a hat, and slop on some sunscreen! You can also stay out of the midday sun (11 AM to 3 PM), when the sun's rays are at it's strongest.
  • Ensure children know the potential risks associated with water activities. Never leave children unattended in the water, even if a life guard is on duty.
  • Swim in designated areas only! A good idea is to practice the 'buddy' system so that your child does not swim alone.
  • Every year more than 200,000 children visit the emergency room for playground injuries. Most injuries are due to falls. Inspect playground equipment and caution your children to watch out for others, especially when they are on the swings.

??DID YOU KNOW??

From April 1, 2000 until September 30, 2000 there were 9013 Alberta emergency room visits relating to spring, summer sport and recreation activities. Of those, 2922 visits dealt with cycling related injuries, 1890 visits were baseball related, in-line skating and skateboarding accounted for 1604 emergency room visits, and 607 visits were water related.* Check out our summer safety tips to keep you and your family safe this summer!
