New Staff
New StaffHi! My name is Deb Fancy, and I’m the newest member of the Safety City staff. On evenings and weekends you can find me whipping children into shape with push-ups and sit-ups and barking commands at them in Japanese. Yes my alter-ego is a Karate Sensei! Along with teaching the Youth Programs at the University of Lethbridge, and enjoying the pleasures of parenting two fine daughters, working for Safety City has provided many excellent experiences. I would like to thank Patti and the members of the board for a warm welcome and positive work environment. In a fast-paced and sometimes hectic world, a place of true team spirit is rare and magical.

Safety Education
This Fall, in the section on Motor Vehicle Safety, we tried to drive home some of the lesser known facts about airbags, seatbelts, compartmentalization on buses, and the very important admonition to stay out of the bus's DANGER ZONE!

Safety EducationLA Transit provided buses so we were able to give children a hands experience.

Currently, with the help of Southland Credit Union's 'Fat Cat', we are teaching Pedestrian Safety. Amid peels of laughter, enthusiastic sharing, song and dance, children are learning to be safe pedestrians.

Knows
Pedestrian
Safety

Cross at corners and crosswalks
Stop your feet
Point your arm
Look all 4 ways
Wait for the vehicles to stop
Look the driver in the eye
Walk between the lines
Look and listen as you cross
Wave to say thank you

Construction
Construction

Due to the high demand of construction companies in Lethbridge this year, Safety City has experienced some delays in the completion of our training facility. However, the mounds of dirt are gone, and a lovely layer of black asphalt surrounds our ship of learning. Sincere thanks are extended to the City of Lethbridge for volunteering a labour force and equipment, and to Tollestrup Construction for completing the project with flare. ConstructionThe next steps include erecting the fence, pouring sidewalks, painting lines for the roads, and installing traffic lights. We're looking at a completion of landscaping and final touches for the Spring of 2001.

Save Those Pennies! They add up.
The Penny Drive initiated by Lakeview school council and Penniessupported by 15 Lethbridge Schools was a tremendous success. A mind-boggling 521 364 pennies were collected by the children of the City of Lethbridge. That's over $5000! This is a particularly heart warming donation because it comes from the parents and the children who believe in the idea of Safety City. Schools participating were: Agnes Davidson, Assumption, Fleetwood Bawden, Galbraith, General Stewart, Immanuel Christian, Lakeview, Lethbridge Christian, Mike Mountain Horse, Nicholas Sheran, Park Meadows, Dr. Probe, Senator Buchanan, St. Martha, and Father Van Tighem.

Board Development Workshop
Board
In September, our board of directors spent an intense 10 hours together in a development workshop conducted by Mrs. Dianne King and Mrs. Colleen Wilson. It was a terrific time of reflection and planning for our organization’s success. Sponsored by Alberta Community Development, Grant MacEwan College, The Muttart Foundation, and The Wild Rose Foundation, this workshop is available to non-profit boards throughout the province at no charge. Safety City board members, committee members, and staff all benefited from the expertise of our presenters. We have developed a plan of action as a result, and are now working on our Policies and Procedures. We are also working on our recruitment and training of volunteers, members, and board members. So be on the lookout for those Safety City recruiters, you may end up with a job!

Brrrrr - that water's cold !
Brrrr - that water's cold

It’s official. Safety City has a fridge. After almost 2 years of searching, we found a donor that was willing to part with his fridge. We extend our thanks to Harold and Edna Plumpton for helping us out. It is soooo nice to be able to keep our lunches cold, and fend off any ecoli!

A Final Farewell
If you read the first article of this newsletter, you probably noticed that A final farewellSafety City has undergone some staff changes. We are sorry to announce that Leanne Sanderson has moved on from Safety City to a new position with the Lethbridge School District No. 51. Leanne was a key factor in Safety City’s progress over the last four years and she will be missed. We know that she will always play a major role in anything she puts her mind to and our loss is Hamilton Junior High’s gain. Leanne, we wish you and your girls all the best and thank you for your years of service!
