A New Face
New StaffSome of you may have already noticed a new face at Safety City. On September 24 Jessica Kleisen arrived prepared to dive right in and start teaching in the schools. In her first week with Safety City and Patti, she saw about 1700 students and memorized our beloved "Sam's Story". So as she is preparing for the next program here is a bit of background on her:
She grew up in Southern Alberta, graduated from the university of Lethbridge with a degree in sociology, and backpacked India and Nepal for 5 months. She says, " at first the differences between Indian and Canadian children seemed vast, but in the end children are the same all over the globe. Though some are more privileged than others, all children laugh, smile and have a story to tell if we have an ear to listen. And even in Delhi they need to look both ways to cross the street!"

Farewell and Good Luck!
We'd like to take this opportunity to say farewell to Deb Fancy who left us in August to pursue other adventures ..... and trust us, with Deb, it's always an adventure. We wish her all the best and thank her for sharing her fresh ideas and energy with us for the last year.

Construction Update:
Just to update you with the latest breaking news at Safety City ..... the traffic lights are up and running and we hope that the concrete curbing will be finished before the snow flies. Our thanks go out to the City of Lethbridge Traffic department for a great job. We know how busy you are!

Looks like we'll be waiting till spring to complete the finishing touches. But you don't have to wait until then to ......

Watch Us Work!
On November 1 & 2, the staff, Board of Directors and wonderful volunteers will be working at Casino ABS, on 3rd Ave. South. Some will be cashiers, others chiprunners, and still others will be bankers, helping us to construct a sizeable bank account! If you are looking for a night out on the town, or would like to watch us work for our money, come on down!

Make a Difference for a Day
It is International Year of the Volunteer and we encourage you to take one day before December 31 to make a difference.
Here are 10 things you could do ......

10. Join a club, or agency like Safety City!
9. Organize and participate inn a green and clean campaign.
8. Organize a volunteer challenge competition between local schools or businesses - who can donate the most
hours.
7. Throw a pary for Volunteers!
6. Collect second-hand items or bottles and donate proceeds to charity.
5. Take the stray dogs from the Animal Shelter for a walk!
4. Donate blood to the Canadian Blood Services.
3. Visit someone you haven't seen in a while.
2. Organize a cake & coffee Monday and have a cake & coffee break with co-workers.
1. Help your Neighbor - shovel the sidewalk, or take a meal to someone who needs it.

There are hundreds of ways you can help out in your community. Visit Volunteer Lethbridge in the Bill Kergan Centre for more ideas, or check out their Website! www.volunteerlethbridge.com

? Did You Know ?
Two times every school day, more than 6,171 Alberta school buses transport over 300,000 young Albertans to and from school. All told, school buses in Alberta travel more than 400,000 kilometers a day! (That's about 10 times around the earth!)

Transport Canada reports that school bus travel in Alberta is 16 times safer than commuting in the family vehicle.*
