Safety Education
For one week this summer, Safety City hosted the AMA School Patrol Camp.  Along with School Resource Officers, Const. Stodolka, and Const. Sauter and the AMA gang, we introduced grade 5 and 6 students to the world of School Patrol.  A great time was had by all!
Safety City and its staff are back into the swing of things for the new school year.  Autumn started off with the phone ringing off the hook!  We managed to book over a 1000 students for our first-ever Pedestrian Safety On-site Program.  Kindergarten and Grade 1 students get to watch Fat Cat learn to cross the street safely and the students get to practice on Safety City streets!  It has been an adventure.

For those who have missed Safety City in the schools, don't worry!  We are starting our second program, Bullying, on November 6 and hope to see everyone by Christmas!

Volunteers
We appreciate all the support we receive, and the past three months are no different.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank them publicly.
We are grateful for all the support and assistance 1st Choice Savings and Credit Union and Fat Cat have given us.  This year they sponsored our Pedestrian Safety Program.  They loaned us Fat Cat for our puzzles, and helped with the bookmarks that all the students received!
D Signs also gets a huge thank you for donating the coroplast boards for our Pedestrian Safety program.  The students hold onto them when they are engaged in the puzzle hunt and crossing the street!  A Safety City thank-you goes to Don Bryksa, from the City of Lethbridge, for fixing our traffic lights.  The traffic lights help teach our pedestrians to know when it is safe to cross busy streets!  We would like to extend a warm thank-you to Janet at Fisher Printing for all the time she contributed to the layout of our Citizenship brochures.  A bouquet of flowers goes to Lorraine Pennington, an LCC student, who explored Safety City from the inside out.  It was great to have an extra set of hands, and she was a welcome addition to the programs for a week.

Fund-raising for Safety City
by Keith Robin

Greetings to all our readers.  At the last Annual Meeting, I was asked to assume the role of Chair of fund-raising for Safety City.  During the past summer, three separate programs have been approved by the Board.  While the first project is underway it is the second and third I would like to discuss.

The second project is PROGRAM SPONSORSHIP and is also in progress.  A number of local businesses, service clubs and philanthropic groups are being asked to help Safety City by agreeing to sponsor, in whole or in part, each of the six programs that will be delivered to the students this year.

The third project is in the planning stages. We expect to complete the development of our Safety City Training Facility with model buildings, grass areas and a playground to augment collections of miniature streets and roads now in place.

In addition to this CAPITAL CAMPAIGN, are plans for an 'Official Opening' of the facility next May.  This will be complete with a student mayor and barbecue reception on the site.

If any one is interested in participating in any or all of these projects please contact the office for more information.  Thank you for all your continuing support.

Citizenship Campaign Is Under Way!
Education plays a major role in injury prevention and Safety City is dedicated to supporting and promoting the best in safety behavior in elementary children throughout Lethbridge and the surrounding area. Last school year over 25, 000 student contacts were made during the five programs offered to elementary students. It has always been the policy of Safety City to provide all programs to children during school hours at no charge and yet many people see our programs as part of the school curriculum not realizing that  the service we provided is supported by private donations and sponsorships.

The idea came last spring when it was realized that a city without citizens was really no city at all!  The Safety City Board decided to kick off a Citizenship Campaign,   highlighting the need for continual  financial support and gaining citizens for our city by offering a family citizenship to Safety City for $20/year.

The campaign started after Thanksgiving with 7000 brochures distributed to elementary students.  We hope that this contribution will not only benefit Safety City but the citizens of Safety City.  By purchasing a family citizenship, each person will receive a citizenship card, an invitation to our Annual Meeting and our "Citizen's Day" which will have an official opening by our own Student Mayor of Safety City and barbecue, and notice of parent clinics.

Help us expand our population! If your family is interested in becoming Safety City citizens please contact us at 317-1955.

We can offer a tax receipt for any donation in excess of the membership fee of $20.  After all, what is a city without citizens?

Winter Safety Tips
With winter days fast approaching, we thought we would included some tips to help you and your family stay warm and safe this winter.
  • Dress in layers to stay warm!  Frostbite and hypothermia can set in quickly if you are not prepared.
  • Wear a helmet when sledding, skating or skiing.
  • Stay off frozen lakes and ponds unless permission signs are posted.  Never go on frozen rivers because the water is still flowing underneath and there could be thin ice!
  • Avoid icy slopes or going head first when sledding.
  • If you are going to build a snow fort, don't build a roof with snow or ice, it could cave in!
  • Throwing snowballs is fun, but ice and rock balls are not!

? Did You Know ?
The causes of fire are the same in the Christmas period as in the rest of the year, but the frequency and severity of the fires increases during the holidays.
The frequency of fires related to candles, home heating and electrical sources, increases by 29% during the Christmas holidays in a five year period  (1995-1999).  Fires resulting from candles, for example increases three-fold!
