Safety Education
School has started and so have we! Instead of “Why does a chicken cross the road?”  Patti and Jessica are attempting to answer the question, “How does a chicken cross the road?”  This new character is helping out by teaching students how to properly cross the street, as well as some of the dangers they need to be on the watch for.
In early September we began our Pedestrian Safety Program on –site.  Over 60 Kindergarten and Grade One classes will have attended by the time the program wraps up the end of October.
Our summer safety education programs were fairly quiet this year, with Patti and Jessica helping out at the B.L.A.S.T. programs once this summer, and in July Safety City hosted the AMA School Patrollers Camps for a second time.
In early November you will see Patti and Jessica back visiting schools delivering safety messages about Bus and Motor Vehicle Safety.  It is always a great time to buckle up and learn about the ‘safe zone’ around a bus.  We look forward to seeing everyone before Christmas!

Safety City Events
Safety City had a busy summer!  You may recall from the previous newsletter we had all kinds of events planned for this summer and we thought you might just like to know how they all went.

Safety City Got a Facelift!
As soon as the bikes were put away, Darlene Grabo – Yeoman came in and set up camp for a week, along with all her tools and paintbrushes.  She did a beautiful job creating our Donor Wall!  Patti and Jessica also got up on 30 foot ladders and painted some of the walls around Safety City, giving the building funky color! All the paint and supplies were donated by Ferguson Paint and we would like to say a great big thanks to Ferguson’s and a colorful thank you to Darlene!

The Grass is Now Greener on Our Side of the Fence
On July 12, lots of volunteers came out to help lay sod to finish off the grassy area of Safety City!  We would like to recognize everyone who lent a helping hand before, after and during the sod laying.  The dream of Canbra Field has become a reality.

~ and all the Volunteers that came out!

All Those Hot Dogs
The summer months saw the Safety City Board, staff and volunteers BBQ’ing hot dogs and serving up refreshing cups of Pepsi at the Brick Tent Events.  We would like to extend our appreciation to Scott Morgan, General Manager of The Brick, who organized the supplies and events.  We were able to raise over $1000 in donations throughout the summer, to be put toward Safety City programming.

Safety City Grand Opening
Earlier this spring we saw some financial difficulties yet we felt that this was our opportunity to give back to the community who so faithfully supported us and continues to support us.  Four fun-filled hours on August 30 were planned, complete with a penny carnival, refreshments, a self-guided tour, and of course Opening Ceremonies.
Thank you to Mayor Tarleck for his wise words regarding injury prevention, and cutting the ribbon along side our very own mayor, to officially open Safety
City.  A well deserved thank you also goes out to S. Sgt. Darcy James for her encouraging words regarding young drivers, and Fire Prevention Officer Jack Chapman for inspiring fire safety in our citizens.
We were also pleased to introduce Zachary as the first Student Mayor of Safety
City, Derrick as our very own Police Chief, and Ryan as Safety City’s Fire Chief!  Welcome to all three, you did a great job running Safety City for the day!
A fantastic BBQ was put on by the Kiwanis Club of Lethbridge. They fed over 200 people that day!  While the adults took the Self-Guided Tour and visited, eight different penny carnival activities kept the students entertained.
Thank you’s go out to all the volunteers and all those who attended.  It was a memorable day!  If anyone would like to come check out what actually happened, there is a photo album of the day at the Safety City office.

How You Can Help Prevent Pedestrian Injuries
Did you know that:
In 2000, there were 38 pedestrian fatalities and 1,179 pedestrian injuries on Alberta roads?
It is easy for adults to overlook developmental limitations of a child.  A child’s peripheral vision, ability to judge speed and distance, and directional hearing may not be fully developed.  Until the age of 10, these limitations are very real for child pedestrians.
Children are much smaller and often are not seen by passing motorists.  Talk to your child about driver distractions and how to make eye contact with drivers that do stop for them.
We all know the rules to crossing the street safely but don’t always follow them.  Often we forget that modeling is a very powerful way of learning.  You are your children’s role model.  Strive to set a positive example by practicing safe pedestrian procedures when you are walking with them.

For more information on Pedestrian Safety call us at 317-1955.  With your support we can work together to prevent childhood injuries!

Trick - or Treat?
As Halloween approaches here are some tips for motorists and children to ensure a safe night:
  • Children sometimes forget to look for cars.  Drivers should come to a complete stop at crosswalks and watch out for children emerging from between cars.
  •  Cross only at corners and crosswalks, never in the middle of the block.

  •  Light colored, reflective costumes are the best because drivers can see them more easily.

  •  Masks can limit vision, children should wear face make-up instead.

  •  Students should carry a flashlight to see better and to help them be seen.

  •  Where there are no sidewalks, always walk facing traffic.
