Safety Makes "Cents"
If you rolled 1,056,000 pennies, and placed the rolls end to end, how far would they reach? If you guessed a mile, then you're right. Safety City hopes to raise $10,560 during this school year by taking spare change off your hands.
Downtown LA kicked off the campaign with 50,000 pennies. (That's $500 for those of you who are mathematically challenged). Lethbridge Hurricane fans doled out $285 during a game in October, and members of the general public have been calling and asking us to take hundreds of pennies off their hands. We'll roll it, all you have to do is call 317-1955 to arrange for pick up or drop off.
The cost of educating children about injury prevention is far less than the cost of treating a child once the "accident" happens. The statistics tell us that far too many children are getting injured. In Alberta, more children die of injuries than from all childhood diseases combined. It's easy to see that .. Safety Makes "Cents"

Construction
The Construstion PhaseThe Physical Site
The $64,000 question is still when? when?when? The answer is now "soon" thanks to an amazing donation of $50,350 from the Community Lottery Board. With winter on it's way, the Construction Committee is watching the weather, and making plans to level and compact the site in preparation for the pavement and cement.

Our WebsiteThe Website
It's not hammers and nails, but construction is taking place for Safety City on the World Wide Web. Chuck at DataBoss is hard at work designing an awesome Safety City web page.

Police CarJust For Fun
- In Alabama, it is legal to drive the wrong way down a one-way street if you have a lantern attached to the front of your automobile.
- The Ohio driver's education manual states that you must honk the horn whenever you pass another car.
- In Washington, all motor vehicles must be preceded by a man carrying a red flag (daytime) or a red lantern (nighttime) fifty feet in front of said vehicle.
- In West Virginia, roadkill may be taken home for supper. Bon Appetite!

Safety City Funding

Safety City employees are often asked questions about who we work for. "Are you city employees? Do school boards pay you to do this? The police used to teach us about being a safe pedestrian, do you work for them? How about CHR?"

Our answer is always the same. "We work for the Safety City Society of Lethbridge, a volunteer board of directors that are responsible for setting policy and securing funding for Safety City." This statement is always followed closely by the information that, " The Kiwanis Club of Lethbridge is the major contributor to our operating budget, and in fact supply the money that pays our salaries." (Other funding for the operation of Safety City comes from a variety of sources, including other service clubs, businesses and individuals).

The Kiwanis Club of Lethbridge was first approached back in 1993. They accepted Safety City as a major emphasis project, and agreed to help us "get off the ground". Employees were hired in 1996 and the program began to grow. As 1999 is coming to a close, Safety City has become a strong and valued organization in the community. We would like to thank the Kiwanis Club of Lethbridge for giving us the support that we needed to build such a strong organization.

As all baby birds know, the day comes when you must learn to fly and fend for yourself. The Kiwanians have let us know that it is time to see if we can fly on our own. Over the next year, financial support from the Kiwanis will be decreasing. The board members at Safety City have accepted the challenge to keep this great program flying. The Fundraising and Public Relations Committee at Safety City is now being chaired by Linda Gallant. Committee members include Brian Lagace and Ellie Peters, but they aren't working alone. Every member of the board of directors have agreed to do all that they can in support Safety City fundraising efforts.
Wish us luck, and watch us fly!
